All-mountain MTBs are made for riders who want to cover as much ground as possible with just one bike: long tours, technical single trails, root sections, and the occasional day at the bike park. A travel of approx. 140–160 mm in the front and rear is typical, combined with robust equipment and modern geometry – a true "one-bike-for-everything."
Compared to pure cross-country bikes, all-mountain full-suspension bikes are slightly heavier and significantly more descent-oriented. At the same time, they roll efficiently enough uphill, allowing you to master long climbs under your own power before things really get going on the descent.
An all-mountain bike is generally a full-suspension bike, meaning it features both a suspension fork and a rear shock. It combines climbing qualities with a downhill-capable setup – ideal for tours in low mountain ranges, the Alps, or technical terrain right on your doorstep.
-
Travel: approx. 140–160 mm for reserves in steep and rough sections.
-
Geometry: balanced between efficient climbing and a smooth, stable descent.
-
Components: powerful disc brakes, dropper seatpost, and sturdy wheels.
-
Area of use: tours, technical trails, alpine terrain, occasional bike park use.
Terms like trail bike, all mountain, and enduro are often used in the same breath, but there are differences:
-
Trail bike: usually slightly less travel (approx. 120–140 mm), very efficient and playful. Ideal for local loops, flow trails, and long tours with moderate descents.
-
All Mountain: more reserves (approx. 140–160 mm), sturdier frame, powerful suspension. The ideal compromise for riders who like to push it on descents but also pedal uphill themselves.
-
Enduro: even more travel and more descent-oriented. Perfect for very rough trails and bike parks – though more sluggish on climbs.
If you are looking for a bike that combines tours, trail sessions, and alpine adventures into one package, an all-mountain or powerful trail bike is just the right choice for you.
Full-suspension bikes clearly dominate the all-mountain class because the full-suspension setup offers significantly more comfort, traction, and safety on long descents and in rough terrain. Modern shocks work efficiently, so hardly any energy is lost on climbs.
A trail hardtail can make sense if you are looking for a light, direct bike for less technical terrain or prefer a minimalist setup. As soon as roots, rock gardens, and long descents come into play, the full-suspension bike plays to its strengths.
Before you choose your new all-mountain or trail bike, these points will help you decide:
-
Travel & suspension setup: more travel means more reserves, but also slightly more weight. It is more important that the suspension matches your weight and riding style and is properly tuned.
-
Geometry & intended use: more tour-oriented (more comfortable, upright) or downhill-heavy (flatter head angle, longer reach)? This has a huge impact on handling and ride feel.
-
Wheel size: 29" for great stability and rollover, 27.5" for more agility – or mullet setups depending on the model.
-
Brakes & tires: strong disc brakes with large rotors and grippy tires are a must when heading into real terrain.
-
Details: dropper seatpost, tubeless-ready wheels, and reliable gearing make a difference in everyday use.
Our tip: Think about which trails you spend most of your time on – flowy forest paths, steep rooty trails, or alpine terrain – and choose your all-mountain or trail bike accordingly. We are happy to help you with size, suspension setup, and component selection.
A properly tuned suspension is crucial for all-mountain and trail MTBs: appropriate sag, meaningful rebound, and potentially volume spacers ensure that your bike is sensitive yet doesn't bottom out. We are happy to assist you with the setup – in-store or through consultation after your purchase.
