Orbea is a Spanish bicycle manufacturer based in the cycling-enthusiastic Basque Country. Orbea is one of the oldest bicycle brands in the world, although the company was originally founded in 1840 as a manufacturer of firearms. After the end of World War I, the company decided to use the expertise acquired in arms production in the processing of steel tubes for the manufacture of bicycles, and in 1931 the first Orbea bicycle catalog appeared with three models.
After the manufacturer ran into financial difficulties in the 60s, a group of employees bought the company in 1969 and founded a cooperative - to this day, Orbea is owned by its employees, which creates a motivation that is unique in the bicycle industry.
Today, Orbea is part of the cooperative Mondragón Corporation and can draw on resources such as the wind tunnel at the University of Mondragón when developing its bicycles.
For several years now, the brand has been enjoying increasing popularity among both professionals and amateurs: the ability to customize many bikes, the high quality standards ensured by final assembly and painting at the Spanish factory, the attractive design, and last but not least the good price-performance ratio make Orbea a firm fixture in the scene.
Orbea manufactures its aluminum frames directly at the factory in Mallabia. The final finishing and painting of the frames also take place in Spain; only the top-tier carbon frames are manufactured in China. This allows Orbea to offer its customers unparalleled freedom in personalizing their bicycles, from components to paintwork, at an unrivaled price.
As early as 1934, Orbea participated in the Tour de France with the Orbea Road Cycling Team. Since then, the brand has repeatedly appeared as a sponsor for various teams such as Euskaltel-Euskadi or the Rio Grande Elite Cycling Team. Orbea is no stranger to the winner's podium in mountain biking either: Catherine Pendrel won both the XC World Championship and the World Cup on an Oiz.
In addition to standard warranty services, Orbea offers original owners who register accordingly a conditional lifetime warranty on their frames and rigid forks.
As a traditional cycling brand, Orbea focuses clearly on high-quality, high-performance road bikes such as the Orca and mountain bikes like the XC speedster Oiz, but also offers modern fitness and commuter bikes. With the Orbea Terra, they also have an excellent gravel bike in their product range. The manufacturer's innovatively designed bikes are tuned for performance and meet even the expectations of the most critical cycling enthusiasts. Various attractive paint jobs and personalization options make an Orbea bike a real eye-catcher!
As a forward-looking manufacturer, the e-bike boom has not passed Orbea by. From high-performance e-MTBs like the Orbea Rise and trekking e-bikes like the Orbea Kemen to compact pedelecs for commuters, the brand offers a wide selection of e-bikes for every taste. The company primarily uses motors from Shimano and Mahle, which are perfectly tuned to their respective niches, so that an Orbea e-bike not only looks good but also serves its purpose. The option for personalization is likely to be a selling point for individualists when it comes to e-bikes as well.
