Einsatzbereich & Strecke

What is a city bike?

A city bike is an everyday bike for the city – made for short to medium distances, frequent stops, traffic lights, and spontaneous detours. The focus is on comfort, visibility, and reliability. You sit upright, have a good view of the traffic, and can start, stop, and dismount with ease.

Typical features of city bikes include low step-throughs (especially for women's and unisex frames), sturdy frames, tires suitable for daily use, and a complete set of equipment compliant with road traffic regulations, including lights, mudguards, and a luggage rack. Instead of chasing personal bests, the goal is to travel through everyday life comfortably, safely, and practically.

City bike, Dutch bike, or urban bike?

"City bike" covers several types of bicycles that are all intended for urban use – but differ in their details:

  • Classic city bike: Upright seating position, sturdy frame, usually with an internal gear hub, comfortable saddle, mudguards, and luggage rack – the practical everyday bike for getting from A to B.

  • Dutch bike: Very upright, comfortable seating position, often with a retro look, enclosed chain guard, large luggage rack, and frequently a coaster brake – perfect for leisurely rides on flat routes.

  • Urban bike: Slim, minimalist look, often without many attachments, slightly sportier seating angle – ideal if you are looking for a lightweight, minimalist city bike .

Which version suits you best depends primarily on how relaxed or sporty you want to ride – and how important the look is to you versus maximum comfort.

Typical equipment for city bikes

Good city bikes rely on low-maintenance components suitable for everyday use:

  • Gears: Often an internal gear hub (e.g., with 3–8 gears) – particularly easy to maintain and ideal for stop-and-go in city traffic. Some models come with derailleur gears for a slightly wider range.

  • Brakes: From classic rim brakes to hydraulic disc brakes – the important thing is well-modulated, reliable braking performance in all weather conditions.

  • Lights & hub dynamo: Many city bikes are equipped with hub dynamos – low-maintenance, always available, no battery changes necessary; combined with reliable LED headlights and taillights.

  • Mudguards & luggage rack: Keep clothes clean and provide space for a basket, panniers, or a child seat – ideal for shopping and everyday errands.

  • Comfort components: Ergonomic grips, comfortable saddles, and sometimes suspension seat posts ensure that cobblestones and bumps become much more pleasant.

Who is a city bike suitable for?

A city bike is a perfect fit if you:

  • mainly ride in the city or on short routes in the surrounding area,

  • use your bike for the commute to work, school, university, or for shopping,

  • value comfort, overview of traffic & equipment suitable for everyday use,

  • often ride with a basket, panniers, or child seat.

If you are planning longer tours, sporty excursions, or mixed terrain, a trekking bike or a gravel bike might be a better fit for you. However, for daily city traffic, the city bike is usually the most practical all-rounder.

Frame shape, frame size & seating position

Especially important for city bikes are the frame shape and size:

  • Diamond frame: Classic frame with a top tube – sportier, slightly stiffer, and well-suited for longer distances.

  • Trapezoid or wave frame: Lowered or deeply curved top tube – makes getting on and off easier, ideal for frequent stop-and-go or when carrying luggage.

  • Frame size: Based on your body height and inseam; for city bikes, the seating position can be slightly more compact and upright.

A well-adjusted seating position ensures that you are riding in a way that is easy on your back and relaxed – an important point in everyday life.

Get through the city more relaxed with a city bike

A good city bike takes care of many trips in your daily life: to the supermarket, the office, downtown, or daycare. With a basket or panniers, you can transport groceries and bags comfortably – you are often faster than by car and save yourself the search for parking and traffic jams.
